Older and wiser (temperature baby!) , , . I enjoyed the tobacco for what it's worth, but felt completely satiated for a while. It reminded me of smoking a burnt out matchstick or if you were to smoke the smoke off of a meat smoker. I'm not talking of an even split, nowhere near, but they do lighten the flavoura smidgen! It wouldn't be the first tobacco I reached for, and I have doubts if I'd ever buy it, but I wouldn't refuse another sample. I enjoyed it immensely and it really fed the itch for something different. This is not a tobacco for the neophyte but for the latakia fiend who wants full-bodied spice, depth and complexity in their smoke. Ive tried a lot of english blends that said they had a lot of latakia or said they have full strength smoke, like Samuel Gawiths Commonwealth Mixture. I buy i Pirate Lake is a full body English bend. It smokes cool right of the tin. This blend burns slowly and is exceptionally cool. Just finished my 1st full tin of this and it did not take long. I guess a lot of the smell comes from the turkish as well, its like a battle between the latakia and the turkish in the smell, but in taste the latakia wins, of course. I like it. Pirate kake is smooth, and it has a strong smell, but oddly enough my wife, who always complains about my smoke if it's not a sweet aromatic, came out once and sat next to me and said, "Whoa I don't know why I'm saying this but I like the smell of that." The lack of a virginia component is, IMHO, what sets this blend apart from my other latakia-laden favorites: Old Ironsides and Commonwealth Mixture. Once again C&D is probably my favourite Tobacco company as the blends are spot on and the quality of tobaccos they use seem to be carefully selected and properly kept as far as humidity before blending. This is a premium smoking tobacco that i highly recommend. I like this tobacco. It comes in a plug which I tore apart and put in an air tight jar, like the large ones sold on this site. I also use Pirate Kake to soup up other tobaccos that I think would benefit from a little more latakia. This is a lovely lat-bomb. No less than 70% of the dark smokey leaf goes into this blend, an amazing amount. I've never smoked a blend with this much Latakia and would not have, had it not been given to me. I do believe the time worked in my favor as the sharpness did mellow some. Even stronger in Latakia than Captain Earle's 10 Russians (also a nice, heavy-Latakia blend.) Pre light draw is sweet latakia and some oriental notes. But i mixed about 60% of this w 40% of comoys #4 and majic happened. I'll be honest. You have been warned. It's strong in taste and smell. Made with the Latakia lover in mind, Pirate Kake is a pressed blend from Cornell & Diehl with medium strength and a substantial taste. I can't really pick them out. The Burley and Turkish help to smooth out the smoke and add faint delicious undertones, but the Latakia is supremely dominant throughout the smoke, and never falters.
